Principles

Teaching and learning principles at Opotiki Primary School are based on;

Relationships – to develop and maintain positive relationships between staff, students and whanau that are based on manaakitanga.

High Expectations – to have high but realistic expectations for all students.

Secure Cultural Identity – supporting all of our staff, students and whanau to have secure cultural identities.

Ako – staff, students and whanau learning off each other.

Maori dimensions and Cultural Diversity

Maori students account for 98% of the student population and this is reflective of Opotiki’s bicultural community. The school is committed to
helping Maori students have a strong Maori cultural identity and we are creating an environment that reflects Maori norms, where Maori
students can succeed as Maori.

Opotiki Primary uses tikanga and te reo Maori throughout the school and in a range of situations to help reflect Maori norms, an example of
this is that our school values of Manaakitanga, Waananga Ako, Kotahitanga, Mana Motuhake, Nga Whakapiringatanga are based on tikanga
Maori values.

The school teaches te reo Maori lesson in all classes and this is supported by the school employing two teacher aides who are fluent speakers
of te reo Maori to assist teachers. Opotiki Primary also has a strong kapa haka programme that regularly competes at the regional competition.
